Why Are School Buses Yellow

Yellow was chosen because it attracts your attention more quickly than most other colors. Red was considered but tests were taken and yellow was 1.24 times greater at getting your attention especially your peripheral vision. Yellow was also the choice because black lettering had better visibility during low light hours such as morning and evening.

Frank W. Cyr organized this endeavor and with the help of a $5000.00 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and the expert advice from DuPont and Pittsburgh Paints, yellow became the perfect choice for the color of school buses.

This all came about in 1939 and soon became the accepted standard across the United States and Canada.

Frank W. Cyr was a professor emeritus of rural education at Teachers College New York, New York and is best known as the Father of the Yellow School Bus.
